The Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa (M5S), has ordered two investigations, one of the technicians of the Ministry and one of the police forces, after having received numerous reports from citizens from all over Italy on massive cuts of trees in the cities, during these days lockdown.
The minister announced it during a live Facebook today.
"We are working a lot with the Public Green Committee, established by law at the Ministry with a whole series of specialists, on the reports that have come to us on the cutting of trees - Costa said -. I asked the experts of the Committee, which I met yesterday in videoconference, to deepen this theme. I have to understand why many citizens, all over the national territory, report this problem to me: a very large number of cuts in road trees and the municipal area. I have given this indication and will update you on what I am they will say. "
"In parallel to the Committee - said Costa -, I also asked the police bodies in the area to intervene, to understand if we are facing crimes".
"We take into account that the Ministry of the Environment does not have direct competence on the subject, it is a competence of the Municipalities - the minister specified -. I am not accusing one or the other. I am putting myself side by side, to understand if I can help the Municipalities in any way ".
