IMF-WTO appeal: 'Reduce trade restrictions'

'Open trade promotes growth and jobs' (ANSA)

The IMF and the WTO are calling on governments to reduce restrictions on trade. In a joint note the two international organizations make an appeal not to succumb to the temptation to impose or intensify trade restrictions. Open trade exchanges, they say, can foster growth and job creation. "Greater attention" should be given to the "role of open trade policies to defeat the virus, bring jobs back and boost economic growth," say the IMF and WTO. "In the midst of the 2008 financial crisis, leaders are pledged" not to give in to "restrictions on import, export and investment. This commitment has prevented a spread of restrictions from worsening the crisis and delaying the recovery. One step similar is necessary today - observe the IMF and the WTO - We ask governments to refrain from imposing or intensifying trade restrictions and to work together to remove those imposed since the beginning of the year. History teaches us that keeping markets open it helps everyone, especially the poorest. We act on the basis of the lessons we have learned ".
