Luca Guadagnino and the Coen brothers tackle the Scarface by Howard Hawks and Brian de Palma

The director of Call Me by your Name, is working on a new remake of the classic gangster film. Ethan and Joel Coen chose to transpose the story to Los Angeles.


A remake of the legendary gangster film Scarface , which will take place in Los Angeles, will be released with the Coen brothers in the script under the supervision of Universal Pictures studios, AFP learned from a source close to the film on Thursday. The feature film, the third cinematographic version of this bloody drama unfolding in the world of the American underworld, will be directed by Luca Guadagnino ( Call Me By Your Name ).

The first Scarface was produced in 1932 by Howard Hawks, who was inspired by a novel from the life of Al Capone and set the scene in the Italian mafia of Chicago. In 1983, Brian De Palma had chosen Miami for his successful remake, with Al Pacino in Tony Montana, a ruthless and violent Cuban refugee building himself a crime empire based on the trafficking of cocaine.

The new film programmed by Universal will rethink " the story of immigrants " which is the engine of the two previous Scarface , with the scenario the brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, who worked for a long time on the project. According to specialist media, the Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is working alongside a sequel to Call Me By Your Name - which had won him the Oscar selection - as well as an adaptation of the novel His Majesty of the Flies.

No details were given on the release date of the next Scarface or on the distribution of roles. The productions are currently completely halted in Hollywood due to containment measures against the Covid-19.
