(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 18 - Kirill Petrenko won the Abbiati prize as best conductor of the year for concerts with the Orchestra and Choir of Santa Cecilia and with the Rai Orchestra of Turin. This was decided by the National Association of Italian Music Critics. In Rome, the principal conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted Symphony no. 9 of Beethovenil 4, 5 and 6 April 2019 with a cast of voices formed by Hanna-Elisabeth Müller (soprano), Okka von Damerau (contralto), Benjamin Bruns (tenor) and Hanno Müller-Brachmann (bass).
Before last year - it is said in a note from the National Academy - Kirill Petrenko had already directed the Cecilians in November 2010 in the Psalm Symphony of Stravinsky and in the Symphony n. 7 "Leningrad" of Šostakovičmentre in 2013 the Russian director had ventured into a memorable Rhine Gold on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Richard Wagner.
Kirill Petrenko, born in Omsk in Siberia, is the Principal Director of the Berliner Philharmoniker from the 2019/2020 season.
He has collaborated with the Wiener Volksoper, the Meininger Theater and the Komische Oper Berlin; he was appointed musical director of the Bayerische Staatsoper for the period 2013-2020 and was guest conductor of the Opera Theaters and of the main Symphony Orchestras around the world.
