(ANSA) - LONDON, JULY 15 - A sculpture made in a hurry in black resin was replaced at night by a local protester of the Black LivesMatters (Blm) movement, the statue of Edward Colston torn from his stand in Bristol last month during one of the anti-racist protests also promoted in Great Britain on the scia of the killing in Minneapolis of the African American George Floyd.
The initiative, spontaneous and not authorized by the City Hall according to the rules, was the birth of the work of a London artist, Marc Quinn, who personally took care of raising the work depicting Jen Reid, an activist who was noticed by daimedia after the demolition of the statue of Colston - wealthy benefactor of Bristol who also made a fortune as a slave trader between the 17th and 18th centuries - to have climbed on the pedestal and posed with his fist raised upwards. Quinn explained that she had contacted Reid and the latter confirmed that she had given consent, believing that she could pay homage with her own image to the "fight against discrimination" of her community and her family. However, local authorities have not yet decided what to do with that pedestal, after recovering the Colston statue and transferring it to a museum for restoration. While the shooting is under investigation, as an illegal act, by the police who arrested a 24-year-old couple of weeks ago. The mayor of the city, Marvin Rees, a laborer of Caribbean origins, despite having hinted several times that he did not want to put Colston back in his place, meanwhile distanced himself from Quinn's "spontaneous" action. "The sculpture erected today is the result of a London artist's decision - he cut short as if he wanted to highlight its extraneousness - the installation did not request and did not receive any permission".
