(ANSA-AFP) - ATHENS, JULY 23 - A forest fire fueled by strong winds near Corinth, in the south-west of Greece, has been devastating a large area for two days and the firemen are working hard to extinguish the flames and contain damage. At the moment there are no victims.
"The force six winds and the flames caused material damage to some homes," said an official. The firefighters have strengthened their presence on the spot, with a total of 268 firefighters and volunteers, aided by about forty trucks, three-aircraft and six fire-fighting helicopters, according to the same source.
At least four locations were evacuated as a precaution yesterday, when the fire broke out around noon about 80 kilometers from Athens, in the Peloponnese.
In addition, the firefighters today contained three other incendiboschivi in Peloponnese and Crete.
During the summer, fires in Greece are frequent due to high temperatures, often above 35 degrees and strong winds. Two years ago, on July 23, 2018, a previous fire in the seaside resort of Mati killed 102 people and burned most of the houses in the area, about thirty kilometers north-east of Athens.
