United States: 13 sisters of the same convent die of Covid-19

Twelve of them died between April 10 and May 10. A 13th died on June 27.


The coronavirus has wreaked havoc at “the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary” convent in Michigan. Between April 10 and June 27, thirteen nuns died of the disease, including twelve in one month, reports the New York Times.

“We are saddened for each of our sisters who died during the pandemic across the province and we appreciate all those who support us in prayer and in various ways,” said Sister Mary Christopher Moore, President of the American daily. the “Our Lady of Hope Province” community, which brings together some 400 nuns from North America.

Dangerous for nuns

These women were members of the congregation of Saint-Félix de Cantalice, more commonly known as Féliciennes.

With the spread of the virus, the convent to which they were part had implemented several security measures. It no longer welcomed visitors, the sisters enforced social distancing and group work was done with a limited number of people, reports The New York Times. In addition, the mass was done by video.

The American daily adds that the virus is particularly dangerous for nuns, as they live in community. “Our community continues to serve those in need and provide education and care for all,” Sister Mary Christopher Moore concluded in The New York Times.
