"Our story is over." The director fired by index said so. (HANDLE)

(ANSA) - BUDAPEST, JULY 25 - "Our story is over". Lo said the director fired by index.hu, the largest Hungarian online newspaper, very critical of Viktor Orban's government, after editorial journalists resigned in mass protest against the dismissal.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators staged a protest march last night, at the invitation of the opposition party (liberal) Momentum, claiming press freedom, calling it a serious danger.
The troubles of the independent body, one of the few left in the country, began when an entrepreneur close to the populist awarding bought a 50% stake in the publishing company. "Our independent voice is in danger, we risk closure," wrote director Szabolcs Dull, who was fired two days ago.
The largest Hungarian newspaper, Nepszabadsag was closed in 2016, after being purchased by Orban's most favored oligarch. Index has published countless investigative journalism articles in the past few years, exposing government government sandals. Since 2010, Viktor Orban's government has systematically transformed public media into government-sponsored propaganda bodies, and has silenced independent bodies. (HANDLE).
