2020-08-11T15:23:05.997Z

Like every week, here are the favorite films of the editorial staff among the new releases on display this Wednesday.

Not to be missed this week: the little Indian “Yakari” who becomes the star of a film, an American post-apocalyptic film and a beautiful story of babies…

"Yakari, the great adventure"

Yakari, a reckless and mischievous young Sioux who lives in the plains of the West with his parents, receives, during a dream, a fabulous power from the hands of his “Great Eagle” totem: the gift of conversing with animals. Which is good, because Yakari wants to tame a legendary wild horse, deemed unapproachable, Petit Tonnerre. He and the animal will learn to tame each other, to respect each other and to live incredible adventures at the risk of their lives ...

For this first cinema adaptation of a successful comic followed by two animated series, the character of Yakari is experiencing a return to his roots. Remarkable and exotic, this animated film full of pretty messages remains faithful to the spirit of the comic book as well as the series, while enriching its graphics: the children will love it.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

“Yakari, the great adventure”, Franco-German animated film by Xavier Giacometti and Toby Genkel. 1h30. From 5 years old.

"Light of My Life"

The United States, in the near future. A virus has ravaged the planet, killing almost all of the female population. Civilization has not completely returned to barbarism, but every man for himself has become the rule. In this ruthless world, a father crosses the country with his daughter, Rag, one of the few surviving women. Extremely cautious, he passes her off as a boy and avoids towns and villages as much as possible, minimizing contact with his fellows. But Rag, who enters adolescence, begins to find loneliness heavy ...

Of course, the theme of "Light of My Life" evokes the famous "the Road", in particular because of its post-apocalyptic decor. But Casey Affleck's film necessarily sticks more to the news since, even if it was shot in 2018, it talks about a viral pandemic. Casey Affleck favors the story between the father, whom he plays on screen, and his daughter, the extraordinary Anna Pniowsky, a Canadian actress who was barely 12 years old at the time of filming. A post-apocalyptic film that is ultimately rather intimate ...

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

“Light of My Life”, by and with Casey Affleck, but also Anna Pniowsky, Elizabeth Moss… 2 hours.

Double strip film, which evokes both the supercharged youth of her heroine and her current working conditions in a large maternity hospital, "See the day" is very successful in this description of the daily life of those who are responsible for " hatch ”newborns and incubate them during their first days. As moving as it is instructive and militant when it shows this maternity hospital, its staff, babies and mothers, the film also owes a lot to its actresses, Sandrine Bonnaire and Aure Atika in particular.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3/5

"See the day", French comedy dramaby Marion Laine, with Sandrine Bonnaire, Brigitte Roüan, Aure Atika, Kenza Fortas… 1h31.

"The Perfect Candidate"

Seven years after the noticed "Wadjda", Haifaa Al-Mansour returns to her country of origin to recount once again the struggle of a woman in Saudi Arabia where their rights are regularly violated. She follows the journey of Maryam, a young single doctor who decides to run for municipal elections. Haifaa Al-Mansour chooses to deal with the various problems facing Saudi women without pathos ...

It blows like a breeze of freshness on this committed and very current dramatic comedy which plunges us into the heart of the daily life of the country and its absurdities, that the scenario often denounces in the tone of humor. The links between the characters are very fair, like their interpreters, starting with Mila Alzahrani in the title role, funny and endearing. With this film, as with "Wadjda", Haifaa Al-Mansour aims to change mentalities and reaffirm her feminist struggle.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3/5

“The Perfect Candidate”, Saudi comedy drama by Haifaa Al-Mansour, with Mila Alzahrani, Dae Al Hilali, Khalid Abdulrhim… 1h45.

"Nana and the girls by the sea"

Patricia Bardon, who lives in Le Crotoy, in the Bay of Somme, has chosen to set this iodized feature film there which follows the sentimental adventures of a group of young people from the town. One is a butcher, the other manager of the Café du center, the heroine, Nana, works at the local tourist office with her lover, Mathieu, a guide. But Mathieu wants to see elsewhere and Nana leaves him. From there, it's the waltz of feelings, and the waltz of couples in the Internet age. It goes, it comes, it touches each other a little, it kisses and it argues, it betrays itself and it is discovered. It's both very vain and quite charming, a bit retro, sometimes poetic, often prosaic, unpretentious. We are surprised, however, to sympathize with the fate of the characters.

EDITOR'S RATING: 3/5

“Nana et les filles du bord de mer”, French dramatic comedy by Patricia Bardon, with Sofia Manousha, Guilhem Valayé, Grégoire Isvarine, Heloïse Roth… 1h18.
