DiCaprio fights in "Gangs of New York"

AMAZON PRIME VIDEO. When the Civil War began in New York City, corruption was rampant and Five Points, one of the city's poorest neighborhoods, was plagued by gang warfare. A young Irish immigrant, Amsterdam Vallon, returns there after spending fifteen years in a reformatory. His goal: to take revenge on William Cutting, alias Bill the Butcher, a powerful gang leader who killed his father ...

Martin Scorsese, director of "New York, New York" and "Taxi Driver", grandson of Sicilian immigrants, delves into the history of his hometown with this saga of nearly three hours. Precise, efficient, even virtuoso, it illustrates a forgotten part of the history of nascent America, mixing violence and racism. Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent as young Amsterdam Vallon, as is Daniel Day-Lewis, impressive as Bill the Butcher.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4.5 / 5

Monsters and Racism in "Lovecraft Country"

Following a letter sent by his father, he sets out to find her across the country. Along the way, he must not only face the prevailing racism, but also frightening supernatural monsters.

Strange mixture that this mix between denouncing the status of blacks half a century ago and gore and violent scenes where some monsters, from the imagination of Howard Philip Lovecraft, attack humans, and they do not care the color of their skin… But the dosage is well done, and we quickly find ourselves caught up in the game of this singular series.

Far from these low concerns, Prince Chauncley (stunning Daniel Radcliffe, star of the "Harry Potter" saga) is a stupid young man raised in a bubble of privilege, but who remains a gentle lamb compared to his father, a bloodthirsty tyrant. This gallery of colorful characters gives rise to a series full of humor, remarkably written and performed.

"World's Most Wanted" tracks down major criminals

NETFLIX. This documentary mini-series, which is among the top 10 most watched in the United States and Canada, tells the hunt for five of the most wanted criminals in the world: a Russian mafia, an English Islamist, a Sicilian godfather, a narco - Mexican trafficker and a Rwandan genocidaire. A French production, financed by Netflix, which has given up big resources in order to achieve an impressive result.

The journalists set off to meet the victims, investigators and accomplices in the various countries where criminals have been rampant. Strong testimonies, the large-scale investigation and the discovery of these high-ranking criminals little known in France make you forget a few tricks specific to raising the emotion. Part of the budget was also used to purchase archival footage.

EDITOR'S RATING: 5/5

"Nashville", rivalries in the country of country music

OCS. In Nashville (Tennessee, United States), the capital of country music, singer Rayna James (played by Connie Britton of "Friday Night Lights") has been queen for a long time, but is beginning to have trouble filling concert halls. Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere, from "Heroes") is the new starlet that teenage girls dream of being. Two careers, two temperaments, one passion… and an inevitable rivalry. The conductor of the series is Callie Khouri, screenwriter of "Thelma and Louise", who has already proven her talent to bite into female characters who depot.

Love stories, personal dramas, rising hopes, political scandal: all the ingredients for a good saga are there. As a bonus, the musical atmosphere is neat, with a multitude of songs written especially for the series. What a great idea from OCS to make available all six seasons of this nice series which ended in 2018! Note that we can also watch them on Amazon Prime Video.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5
