The biblical story of the fate of the prophet Jonah has always been controversial, with no solid evidence to back up his story. Jonah was a Hebrew prophet who lived in the eighth century BC, during the reign of King Jeroboam II. Although the story of Jonah is considered by many to be an example intended to teach about compassion and trust in God, there are people who believe that there is more to his story than meets the eye. To remind you, according to the Book of Jonah, a dove was sent on a mission to the Assyrian city of Nineveh to foretell its destruction. He refused God's mission and tried to escape by ship to Tarshish. In revenge God created a storm at sea and a dove was thrown from the deck to save the vessel from sinking. According to the Bible, a dove was swallowed by a large fish or whale, in which it stayed for three days and nights. In the whale's belly Jonah turned to God with a plea for forgiveness and God forgave him and took him out of the whale's gut alive - only to demand that he go again and fulfill his request.

Although many believe it is a fictional story designed to glorify the power of God, Tom Meyer, a theologian from the Shasta Bible College, believes there is archaeological evidence that may corroborate the story. He told Express.co.uk: "In relation to archaeological evidence The history of the story of Jonah, the idea of a dove resurrected from the watery tomb has won so many believers and resonance so strongly in Jewish thought and customs that it has become a recurring motif on the ossuaries and tombs of early Christian Judaism. "He added: Not only the name of the dove but also his rough sketch comes out of the whale's mouth. In later centuries the "sign" of Jonah became the clear expression of the Christian belief in the resurrection with more than a hundred examples of visual images of Jonah in the Christian catacombs of Rome. There is also a first-hand description of a man who claims to have been swallowed by a whale - and survived. Professor Meyer said: "With regard to a first-hand story similar to the story of Jonah, a theological review of Princeton University from October 1927 reports the story of James Bartley, who in 1891 was swallowed by a sperm whale and rescued two days later by his fishing friends near the Falkland Islands. The whale reportedly attacked Bartley's boat and it landed right in the whale's mouth. Two days later, the fishermen spotted the same whale dead and floating on the water. They stripped his skin and found Bartley unconscious. Although Bartley's skin was reportedly eaten "By gastric juices, he lived another 18 years and toured the world recounting his experiences as the modern dove. The only person who rejected Bartley's remarks was the wife of the boat captain, who was not an eyewitness."

However, many historians are unconvinced of Bartley's story and have found it inconsistent. This is of course apart from the fact that many do not believe in man's ability to be swallowed whole (a whale shark's esophagus, for example, is only measured by a few centimeters) and all the more so to survive inside a whale's belly.
