The woman was with her husband and two young children at a remote camping cabin in northern Saskatchewan when the black bear attacked them, the police said.
The 44-year-old was picked up by a rescue helicopter, but then succumbed to her serious injuries.
Her father told a local radio station that he was speaking to his daughter via satellite phone when he suddenly heard "disturbing noises". After a few minutes of silence, he hung up and tried to call back. Finally, his son-in-law called him and said there had been a bear attack.
The wife's husband and two young sons were unharmed. The man shot the bear.
Police said there has not been a fatal bear attack in Saskatchewan province since 1983. Why the bear attacked the woman is unclear.
The father of the deceased told the radio station that rangers had found many blueberries in the bear's belly and assumed that the bear was not hungry. The ranger also said that the bear was not provoked. His daughter had her back to the animal and therefore did not see the bear.
