The weekly figures released Wednesday by the WHO attest to a drop in the number of new cases detected per day around the world. Over the past week, more than 1.7 million cases have been reported to the UN organization, "a 5% decrease in cases over one week," the organization said.
While the decline is obvious in some countries, this is not the case everywhere. For some, the epidemic has never stopped growing. In others, it seems to be on the rise again.
A decrease mainly attributable to the situation in the United States and Brazil
In July, the two American giants alone accounted for nearly half the number of new cases detected around the world (44%) according to Johns Hopkins University.
On July 25, 2020, the United States recorded more than 78,000 cases in one day on its territory. Yesterday, August 25, 2020, there were 38,000, almost half as many.
Even if it is more uneven, the trend seems similar in Brazil, where there were 69,000 cases on July 29, 2020, 50,000 on August 23 and 17,000 cases yesterday.
Elsewhere on the continent, a drop is also notable in Mexico, the seventh most affected country in the world, and noticeable in Colombia, where the authorities have so far failed to curb the epidemic. And this, despite a demanding protocol, although difficult to enforce in a country plagued by many difficulties.
A situation that remains worrying in many countries
However, all the lights have not turned green, especially in the Americas. Argentina continues a discontinuous rise that began in April. Peru, which seemed to start a decline throughout the month of June, saw screenings soar throughout the summer.
Elsewhere in the world, it is above all to India that all eyes are turned. No sign of recession for the time being, in the second most populous country in the world. The epidemic particularly affected the southern states of the country, where the cities of Bombay and Chennai are located in particular.
Signs of a rebound in Europe
To a lesser extent, the number of cases detected each day is on the rise again in several European countries, which are testing more and more.

It is especially in Spain that the signs of circulation of the virus are the most worrying. France is also concerned: the increase in incidence has been confirmed for several weeks.
Signs of recovery are also notable in Germany and Italy, already hard hit by the epidemic in the spring.
On the whole of the old continent, it should however be noted that the number of cases detected does not seem to cause an increase in deaths. With the exception of Spain, which recorded 52 new deaths on Tuesday. A trend, however, far from the 950 deaths recorded in the Iberian Peninsula on March 3.
