Many dogs love to bathe. Cooling off is good for the animals, especially on hot days. However, wheals and redness may appear on the skin afterwards. It is often caused by parasites in the water.
Bonn (dpa / tmn) - Parasites can spoil the bathing fun for dogs. So-called cercariae, which are larvae of small flukes, live mainly in standing water. They primarily infect ducks, but can also penetrate the skin of dogs and humans, warns the Federal Association for Animal Health.
If the infection is repeated, skin reddening, wheals or itching occur. If the itching is severe, the veterinarian should treat the four-legged friend. So-called bath dermatitis is not really dangerous.
If the dog is already suffering from skin problems such as eczema or inflamed areas, a temporary bath break is advisable.
