She is said to have killed five of her children: The Wuppertal public prosecutor has applied for an arrest warrant for the murder of a 27-year-old.
There are indications that she sedated and suffocated her children, a spokesman for the prosecutor said at a press conference.
The children's bodies had previously been found in Solingen-Mitte.
The children were between 18 months and 8 years old.
Then the woman tried to take her own life.
She survived seriously injured and is being treated in hospital.
Another, eleven-year-old son of the woman is, according to the police, in "family care".
The woman is currently "not able to be questioned," it said.
"Emotional overload"
A spokesman for the police said at a press conference that it is currently assumed that the woman acted in a state of "emotional overload".
This is where the motive is to be found.
The family of the five killed children from Solingen was already known to the city youth welfare office before the crime.
The city announced that the authority had made offers of help.
The city emphasized: "At no point in time were there any findings about abnormalities or a potential risk to the children."
Further details were not given with reference to personal rights.
