Huawei's operating system, which will replace Google's Android, may be available on smartphones early next year.

This was stated by Yu Chengdong, CEO of the Chinese giant's consumer products division during the developer conference.

The 'homemade' operating system is called HarmonyOS, the source code will be made available from December to developers.

The decision, already leaked in recent months, is the effect of Trump's ban.

The US has pushed allies to avoid products made by Huawei, which is also the global market leader for 5G.

Huawei's HarmonyOS operating system is so far only used with some products, including smart TVs and wearables, but not on the company's smartphones.

The move to bring it to mobile devices indicates that the Chinese giant intends to step up plans to create its own ecosystem, detaching itself from the United States which currently holds the dominance of operating systems with Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

"We will introduce the work of Chinese developers to global consumers, hoping to see more TikTok in the future," Yu Chengdong pointed out in reference to the popular Chinese app, also in Trump's sights.

Huawei's announcement of its HarmonyOS operating system was made during the annual developer conference that is held at the company's headquarters in Shenzhen city.

Huawei is the second largest smartphone maker in the world after Samsung, but analyst firm Canalys recently said it overtook the South Korean company in the second quarter of 2020, the one on which the effects of the coronavirus were seen on the smartphone market.
