A painting by Sisley sold for more than 250,000 euros at auction

Dated 1892, the work had been updated during a succession almost a month ago. It was then estimated between 200,000 and 300,000 euros.


A painting by Alfred Sisley, unearthed during an estate and owned by a family for nearly 130 years, was sold for 250,100 euros (including costs) on Saturday in Bourg-en-Bresse, told AFP the auctioneer Bénédicte Girard-Claudon.

The “rediscovery” of this painting, which bears Sisley's signature but had not yet been authenticated, was made by the auctioneer on the occasion of an estate in Ain.

This work by the English painter (1839-1899), born in Paris and having worked in France, was estimated between 200,000 and 300,000 euros.

Dated 1892, the painting in perfect condition presents a view of the rue des Fossés in Moret-sur-Loing, where the impressionist painter lived, who will experience posthumous glory.

said Ms. Girard-Claudon.

The owners were

"descendants of Alfred Ernst, a musical and artistic critic related with Charles Cottet, painter of the Black Band who had exhibited with Sisley at a salon in 1890"
