The corona plague adversely affects not only the body of those infected with the virus, but also the psyche of anyone who faces its consequences, that is to say - everyone.

Still, there are those who pay a heavier mental price.

Last week we published a study according to which women are more mentally injured than the distress caused by the epidemic, and now a new Israeli study reveals that the living area may also affect the degree of injury.

Researchers from Tel Aviv University conducted a study in the first corona wave and found that residents of the south and the Gaza Strip suffer from more severe mental distress due to the corona.

According to the study, the post-traumatic reactions suffered by residents of the south and the Gaza Strip due to the continued exposure to rockets and missiles have a more severe negative impact on their condition during the corona - compared to those who experienced other traumatic events, such as car accidents, casualties, casualties, assault Physically or sexually and the like.

According to the findings of a study conducted by Dr. Yael Lahav of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, the link between post-traumatic symptoms due to a traumatic event from the past and present anxiety during the corona was significantly stronger among southerners (contact strength 0.69, which is considered very high) , This compared to survivors of other traumatic events (contact strength 0.47).

The study was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

The study was conducted during April 2020, in the midst of the first wave of the corona plague in Israel, and included 976 Israelis, of whom 255 residents of the south reported exposure to missile and rocket fire, and 793 non-residents of the south who reported various traumas in the past.

As expected, all people exposed to traumatic events suffered more from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pre-traumatic symptoms during corona, compared with people who were not exposed to traumatic events.

However, when the researcher compared southerners to survivors of other traumatic events, it was found that southerners who are exposed to ongoing trauma suffer from a greater number of symptoms such as depression, anxiety and other mental distress.

Ongoing trauma over ongoing trauma.

Dr. Lahav sought to examine the psychological responses to the pressures produced by the corona epidemic among trauma survivors of various types, and how they deal with the difficulties associated with corona. “I have found that a history of exposure to traumatic events increases the chances of developing anxiety and symptoms reflecting a traumatic response to the corona.

This in itself is known to trauma researchers and not surprising, ”she explains,“ The novelty in the study is the high vulnerability of southerners.

Those residents are exposed to ongoing trauma, which has no clear end, and they live in a daily alertness that erodes their mental resources.

The result is higher levels of anxiety, depression and traumatic symptoms - even compared to people who have experienced traumatic events in their lives. "Symptoms

that reflect a traumatic reaction to the corona have four main manifestations: intrusion, which reflects a re-experience of the trauma (like flashbacks); Such as difficulty sleeping, irritability and stress); avoidance (tendency to avoid trauma-related stimuli); and changes in cognition and mood, which are manifested in pessimistic perceptions, negative thoughts about the self and the world and dominance of emotions such as guilt, shame, fear and anger.

Dr. Lahav notes Because the study points to the need to provide clinical intervention to residents of the south and Gaza Strip during the corona plague, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy that can also be performed online.
