Megan Jovon Ruth Pete had to experience what the marginalization of black women in America feels like in July when rapper Tory Lanez shot her in the foot after a party in the Hollywood Hills.
In the car, in an argument she wasn't even involved in.
In order not to let things escalate in a middle-class white neighborhood, Megan lied to the police that she cut herself.

Lanez, now indicted, denies his guilt to this day - and Megan was branded a liar by his fans on the Internet when she finally made public that she had actually been shot.

It is the triumphant end to a year in which the Houston rapper managed to close ranks with R&B queen Beyoncé, who also came from Texas (in the remix of the hit single "Savage"), by making it onto the cover of "Time" - Magazine and made it into the list of the “100 Most Influential People” - and finally, together with colleague Cardi B and the pornographic track “WAP”, set a new standard in female-sex-positive hip-hop canon.
And then a self-drunk guy shoots you in the foot.
It couldn't be more symbolic.
Correspondingly, Tory Lanez gets his fat off in the first piece of "Good News": "And if it weren't for me, same week, you would have been indicted (Should've let them lock your ass up)," she says in "Shots Fired," a barrage of contempt in the elegant old-school flow that has become the trademark of Megan Thee Stallion.
Breonna Taylor, the medical assistant who was shot by police in Kentucky, is also mentioned in this opening statement: Megan Thee Stallion has been in a public dispute with the Attorney General of the US state for months, accusing him of protecting the officers involved.
The rapper has long since made herself a spokeswoman for degraded black women, apart from her music.
In a clever opinion piece for the »New York Times« she makes a plea to be allowed to present her body as sexy as it suits her, and follows the tradition of the late US politician and civil rights activist John Lewis: Everyone who is »good trouble, necessary trouble, "run the risk of being attacked by those who have settled comfortably in the status quo," she wrote: "But you know what?

On the one hand, it doesn't get more political than in “Shots Fired” on “Good News”.
On the other hand, the constant renegotiation of the battle zone between the sexes is of course a political act. These consistently perfect pop hooks also help over a certain monotony of the album.
Megan Thee Stallion has a lot to say, the beats are accordingly unspectacular to sparingly efficient: kick, snare, bass, fizzy-fizzy percussion, soul or classic rap sample, and the track, which rattles between the nineties and modern trap, is ready.
Only in the seventh track, when R&B muse SZA sings along in “Freaky Girls”, does the hitherto breathless but also breathtaking staccato change.
The other guests, hip rap stars like Lil Durk, DaBaby, 2Chainz and Big Sean, are little more than seemingly threatened cues.

The only failure of the album is Popcaan's sperm and cock patois in the sticky Caribbean porn soundtrack "Intercourse".
