Shampoos, gels, toothpastes ... only a third of cosmetic products deemed safe

60 million consumers have peeled the composition of 160 cosmetic products. One third is free from harmful substances.

More and more vigilant consumers are pushing them to do so.

Cosmetics manufacturers are making efforts, but they must do even better to avoid certain “undesirable” substances in their formulas, estimated Thursday the magazine 60 million consumers, which regularly conducts these tests, also on household products.

Despite these warning shots that push them to virtue, and the apps that challenge them on a daily basis, brands "still have efforts to make to replace unwanted, irritating or allergenic compounds with other, healthier ones", indicates the review, which has sifted through all the ingredients of nearly 160 hygiene and beauty products from around a hundred brands (Garnier, Dove, le Petit Marseillais, Sephora, Yves Rocher, Nuxe, etc.) Result: 50 shower gels, toothpastes or creams, out of 160 are considered safe, therefore "recommended".

Very problematic foundations

“Less than a third of products, however, is too little,” storms 60 million consumers.

Conversely, around thirty cosmetics are in the red category, “to be avoided”.

Among them, foundations “win the prize for problematic products: 7 out of 12 are red!

"Because they contain in particular" substances suspected of disturbing the hormonal system (BHT, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate UV filter, etc.) ".

The majority of the products evaluated fall into the intermediate purse of “orange”.

Shower gels and creams are mostly classified orange and red "because they contain too many irritating and polluting allergens and surfactants", explains the review.

In shampoos, the 60 million testers also noticed the too frequent use of sodium lauryl sulphate and ammonium lauryl sulphate, irritants for the eyes and the skin, harmful to the aquatic fauna and flora.

“Some manufacturers replace them with so-called ethoxylated agents, which are softer… but hardly degradable once released into the environment!

An alternative does exist, however, such as coco-glucoside, a derivative of vegetable sugars that are gentle on the skin and the planet, ”says the review.

For the first time, the magazine tested 24 solid products, which are very popular today.

“Half of the deodorants and a third of the solid shampoos in our sample effectively meet the environmental and health promise put forward by their manufacturers”.

But the other half includes molecules suspected of being endocrine disruptors or aggressive and allergenic surfactants.
