Positive trend for dried fruit for 2020/2021 thanks to a general increase in plantations.
The world production of almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia, pecans, pine nuts and walnuts, but also pistachios in shell, is estimated at 5.3 million tons, with an expected increase of 15% compared to 2019 / 2020, by 13% instead for peanuts.
The economic data is released by the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (Inc) with its first online conference, which was attended by over 1300 operators active in the dried fruit sector, from more than 80 countries.
The report also shows that the estimated production of dehydrated fruit is 3 million tons, slightly down - say the experts - compared to the past season, but able to meet demand.
It is reported that overall the demand for dried and dehydrated fruit during the pandemic was favored by online sales but also by large retailers with the industry benefiting from the change in consumer habits and greater awareness of the nutritional and health properties of "these precious foods".
Finally, it is recalled that the direction that producers and trade associations are taking increasingly in line with the latest trends also contributes to the trend thanks to greater attention to sustainability, support for new scientific studies and promotion and enhancement through ambassadors influencer as in the case of Nucis Italia (Fruitimprese promotional project) in the context of "Dried fruit is well-being".
