The third closure, which is scheduled to begin this afternoon (Sunday), is different from those that preceded it: this time the education system remains open.

While there are plenty of benefits to returning students, of all ages, to settings - social, emotional and academic - there is a real concern that schools will become “corona hatcheries” and accelerate the spread of the community.

This fear is further strengthened today in light of an Israeli study that states that opening high schools for frontal studies significantly increases the chance of contracting the corona virus.

How much does the new strain of corona endanger us?

Researchers from Ben-Gurion and Negev universities examined the rate of infection with the corona virus in children after opening schools in the state of Florida.

They found that in the districts where schools were opened, there was an increase in the rate of infection with the corona virus, especially in middle school, compared to districts where schools taught from a distance.

The findings of the study were published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The state of Florida is the only state that collects age-appropriate morbidity data, so the researchers examined some of the spread there.

Oren Miron, a doctoral student in the Department of Health Systems Management at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, monitored morbidity data for 10 days before the reopening of frontal schools, and for another 20 days after their reopening.

As mentioned, he found that districts that opened physical education schools reported an increase in corona virus infections, especially in the 14-17 age range.

Districts where schools taught from a distance did not see an increase in corona infections.

"Our analysis has significant implications for any country trying to make a decision on whether to physically open schools while fighting infection rates," Meron said in publishing the results. .

The present study is not the first to emphasize that older children are at higher risk.

According to a CDC report, adolescents ages 12 to 17 are twice as likely to be infected with Corona than children ages 5 to 11. In addition, the increase in morbidity among school students may be particularly worrying given that children do not show symptoms of the disease.

A study we published last week, which included more than 2,400 children who were found to be positive for COVID-19, found that a third of children diagnosed with COVID-19 were asymptomatic.

Choosing between two bad options.

On the other hand, children, even if they are 14-17 years old, pay a heavy price for the social disconnection that has been forced on them in the past year, and many of them also find it difficult to learn remotely in the conditions that exist today.

Thus, more than this study indicates that schools need to be closed, it indicates that the distance learning system must be improved and refined so that it also meets emotional needs.

"The study suggests that it is worthwhile to examine the expansion of distance learning in schools, in an accessible and adapted way to the different sections of the population, with an emphasis on non-green areas, especially in middle school," said Prof. Nadav Davidovich In Israel, it is strengthening in light of the increase in corona infections, and the inability to vaccinate most students due to their young age.

The education system is very important in the cognitive and mental development of the children, and the necessary resources must be invested in the complex period in which we are. "
