Spain: How the snow paralyzes Madrid

2021-01-12T15:52:41.317Z

The onset of winter like in the last few days has not seen the Spanish capital for more than 50 years. That creates problems - but it's also just great fun.

Relatively harsh winters are actually not unusual in Madrid, but the city was not prepared for temperatures down to ten degrees below zero.

While many people in Germany have been drawn to snowy areas in recent weeks, many Spaniards would be happy about the end of the onset of winter.

The storm "Filomena" swept across the country over the weekend and caused great damage.

The capital Madrid is particularly hard hit.

The temperatures there sank to ten degrees below zero and up to 60 centimeters of snow fell.

As a result, traffic was largely paralyzed.

The schools, which should actually open again on Monday, will remain closed until at least next week.

The supply of fresh goods such as vegetables, fruit and meat stagnated, and the vaccinations against Corona were also impeded.

The authorities had urged people to stay at home if possible, as trees could snap and ice blocks could fall from roofs.

Nevertheless, many took the chance to spend a few hours in the snow and walked through the white streets.

Nationwide, at least six people have already been killed by the storm and the icy temperatures.

In Vega de Liordes in the province of León - around 400 kilometers north of Madrid - the lowest temperature ever recorded in Spain was recorded on Thursday at minus 35.8 degrees.
