Thanks to a goal in the 99th minute, Palmeiras beat Santos (1-0) in the final of the Libertadores Cup, the South American Champions, winning the second trophy in their history.

In an almost completely deserted Macarana stadium (only a few thousand spectators in the stands), in Rio de Janeiro, a goal by Breno Lopes, entered at 40 'st, gave the victory to his team, putting the opposing goalkeeper with his head.

The recovery granted by the referee is very long: almost 10 '.

The team led by Abel Ferreira won in a Paulista derby with few scoring chances, unlocked by an episode when everything suggested that the 0-0 would remain written. Final game to say the least hot, with the coach of the 'Peixe', Cuca, removed from the bench for having hindered a lineout: the episode sparked a fight between the players of the two teams, who then calmed down.

The 'verdao' had already won the trophy in 1999 and has now acquired the right to participate in the final phase of the Club World Cup, in Qatar, together with the champions of the other world confederations (for Europe-Uefa there will be Bayern Munich) . For Santos this is the second defeat in a final of the Libertadores, after the one remedied in 2003 against the Argentines of Boca Juniors.
