Household costs in the corona pandemic: Every second electricity bill is higher

Due to the Corona * crisis, around every second household in Germany has to make an additional payment on the electricity bill.

Most households are hit hard by the additional costs.

This is shown by a representative survey on behalf of Verivox.

Electricity consumption increases during corona pandemic

During the corona pandemic, many people are at home more often and longer.

Two thirds of the households surveyed (66 percent) report that their electricity consumption has increased since then.

While 48 percent indicate a slightly higher consumption, it is

even much higher for 18 percent of those surveyed

.

Corona pandemic: high electricity bills and back payments for households

Since the billing periods are not uniform, only half of the respondents (49 percent) have received an annual bill for electricity since the beginning of the corona pandemic.

However, the effects of the pandemic are clearly evident in this group: Most of these households (59 percent) had to make additional payments due to higher electricity consumption.

46 percent attribute the additional payment directly to the pandemic.

The households affected state that they paid an average of 112 euros.

As a result, the majority of these households (80 percent) also had to

increase

their

haircuts

.

According to the survey, the average increase in discounts is 19 percent.

More than half of the households (52 percent) that had to make an additional payment stated that they were severely to very severely affected.

"Because of the corona pandemic,

around 20 million households

must

expect

higher electricity costs,

" says Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox.

"For the majority of those affected, these additional expenses are a significant burden."

Electricity bill: Compensate for the increase in costs by changing providers

The higher electricity costs can be partially or fully offset by changing providers.

Anyone who has never changed the electricity tariff can save an average of 378 euros with an annual consumption of 4,000 kWh of electricity.

Anyone who has already chosen a cheaper electricity tariff from the local supplier can

still save an average of 189 euros

by switching to the cheapest available offer

with fair contractual conditions
