The body parts found near London are 33-year-old Sarah E., who has been missing for days. The British police confirmed the identity of the body on Friday - in a case that shook the whole of Great Britain.

An elite police officer who has been in custody since Tuesday evening is suspected of murder.

The official, who belongs to a unit for the protection of parliamentarians and diplomats, was first arrested in Kent, south-east England, on charges of kidnapping.

A day later, the suspicion of murder against him was confirmed.

The man is on remand.

In the meantime, the police supervisory authority has intervened in the case.

It is being investigated whether the London police have correctly responded to a complaint against the suspect for causing public nuisance, the authority said.

The 48-year-old is said to have exposed himself in a fast food restaurant in south London three days before Sarah E. went missing.

Sarah E. had left a friend's apartment in the southern London borough of Clapham on the evening of March 3rd and had not come home.

For days the police asked the public for clues about the case.

On Wednesday, officials searched buildings in London and Kent and a wooded area near Ashford where the body parts were found.

The woman's disappearance and the search that followed shocked and moved the country.

The case primarily sparked a debate about women's safety.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on Twitter on Thursday that he was "shocked and sad".

This "terrible crime" must now be solved quickly.

The independent police oversight agency IOPC has opened an investigation into the investigation into the case.

She also deals with the question of how it came about that the suspect had to be hospitalized on Thursday for a head injury that police said he suffered alone in a cell while in custody.
