(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 27 - The harsh hand of the army was announced last night by state television, which warned demonstrators against the possibility of being hit "in the head and back".

General Min AungHlaing, leader of the junta, said instead, during the Armed Forces Day parade in the capital Naypyidaw, that the military would "protect the people and fight for democracy".

Thousands of people nonetheless took to the streets to protest in Rangoon, Mandalay and other cities.

The Myanmar Now news portal reports that 91 people were allegedly killed across the country today by security forces.

In Mandalay, 29 people lost their lives, including a 5-year-old child, at least 24 in Rangoon.

Other killings have been reported in the central region of Sagaing, Lashio, Bago, near Rangoon and elsewhere.

In the economic capital of the country, some gunshots hit the American cultural center while yet another warning to the army against the killings arrived from the United States.

No one was injured but an investigation has been opened, said US Embassy spokesman Aryani Manring.

General Min Aung Hlaing reiterated the promise of elections, but without indicating any date, showing the utmost determination to open any interruption of the celebration, which commemorates the beginning of the resistance to the Japanese occupation in 1945. It was led by Aung San Suu Kyi's father, still under arrest in a secret location.
