"I officially announce the reopening of the Suez Canal, which will begin to operate from 6:00 p.m. today, on both sides," announced on the evening of March 29 the head of the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, after 7 blocking days.
According to the canal authorities, Egypt lost between 12 and 15 million dollars per day of the closure of the canal: each ship which uses it must pay approximately 500 000 $.
19,000 ships used it in 2019. Each day that the canal was blocked could have cost global trade between six and 10 billion dollars.
