Covid-19: in India, a race against death

2021-04-29T18:43:58.736Z

IN PICTURES - Oxygen and vaccine shortages, outdated hospitals, giant crematoriums ... India, the second most populous country in the world, is submerged by a second devastating wave.

From New Delhi to Mumbai, the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has spread like wildfire in India.

In the space of three months, the number of new daily cases has increased forty-fold.

As a result, hospitals are overwhelmed.

The country is in shortage of everything: ambulances, beds, medicines, oxygen, vaccines, medical personnel, giving rise to dramatic scenes.

Confronted with chaos, Covid-19 patients and their loved ones are often on their own: forced to reach hospitals on their own, they have to wait long hours outside in the hope of an admission and a treatment or find themselves oxygen cylinders to hold until then.

Many die en route, in front of hospital gates or shortly after admission.

Plunged into crisis, the city of New Delhi had to resolve to transform land into giant open-air crematoriums in order to mass incinerate the remains of the victims.
