In Berlin, art hits the wall

East Side Gallery, a portion of the city's east-west divide, has turned into the world's longest open-air art gallery. It celebrates 30 years of its classification as a historical monument. A symbol that has changed the status of street art.


It is the largest open-air gallery in the world, a unique structure of 1.2 km along a four-lane.

As soon as the Wall fell in the fall of 1989, artists from all over the world flocked to Berlin to make their mark on history.

In truth, the concrete support had already been tested by reckless artists who had sneaked in from the West.

Among the pioneers, the French Christophe Bouchet and Thierry Noir hung a pissoir there to pay homage to Marcel Duchamp.

An installation that they had to dismantle in the process, surprised by stunned border guards, Kalashnikov slung.
