(ANSA) - BERLIN, 06 MAY - Angela Merkel reacted consciously to the US initiative to temporarily issue patents on vaccines in order to accelerate their global distribution.
Süddeutsche Zeitung reported, quoting a government spokesperson: "The protection of intellectual property is a source of innovation and must remain so in the future," said the source.
"The limiting factor in vaccine production is manufacturing capacity and high quality standards, not patents," Merkel's spokesperson added to the SZ. "We are working on several fronts on how we can improve production capacity in Germany and the EU, but also globally, and this is also done by the companies involved", he concluded, also underlining that the US proposal would have "significant implications for the production of vaccines in general ".
