A man fired shots at a train depot in the Californian city of San José.
Eight people died, the local police said.
Previously there had been talk of several dead and injured.
A police spokesman said that the alleged perpetrator was also dead and that there was currently no danger to the population.
The spokesman said he could not yet provide more detailed information about the incident.
The alleged perpetrator was a man.
How he died is still unclear.
He couldn't say anything about the shooter's motive either.
"We have investigators on the ground trying to find out what exactly happened," he said.
According to the spokesman, the suspect was an employee of the company.
The train depot for light rail vehicles belongs to the local transport association VTA.
VTA boss Glenn Hendricks said: "A terrible tragedy happened today." Light rail vehicles would be serviced and dispatched in the affected facility.
The attack did not take place in the operations center.
The light rail traffic would be suspended, but buses would increasingly be used.
San Josés Mayor Sam Liccardo said the first step was to help those affected by the attack.
After that, he would focus his efforts on ensuring "that we never again experience such a terrible tragedy as this in San José."
Firearms are widespread in the USA, and in many places the rules are relatively loose compared to other countries.
The CDC health authority recorded a total of 39,707 gun deaths in 2019 alone - almost 110 per day.
