2021-06-10T18:57:13.238Z

In Waren an der Müritz, regular classes in the classroom have already been canceled for several hundred students. But that's not because of Corona: Entering the building is too risky.

Hardly had they had a few days of face-to-face classes when a few hundred students in Waren an der Müritz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had to go back to distance learning - this time not because of the infection.

There was major water damage at the regional school in Waren / West.

This means that most of the classrooms cannot be used.

According to the school, grades 5 to 9 have to stay at home until the end of next week, and then the summer holidays begin.

"There is no other way for security reasons," said Mayor Norbert Möller (SPD) on Thursday.

Nobody can guarantee the electrical system.

After a technical defect, around 20,000 liters of water flowed through the school building over the weekend.

A pressurized water tap in a sanitary room on the first floor had burst.

Since the water flooded the cellar, the electrical system was also defective, said Möller.

The affected floors with insulation from the GDR era would have to be recorded.

According to the information, only a small part of the school building can be used to a limited extent for safe school operations.

Emergency care is provided for pupils in the 5th and 6th grades, some final grades are still writing exams - without electricity.

The school, which also includes the sports hall and auditorium, should be renovated over the next few years.

Möller estimated the current damage at "at least a five-figure amount".

The handing over of certificates should take place from June 16 on.

In the northeast, June 18 is the last day of school before the summer holidays.

Previously, the students in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as in all other federal states, had been in distance learning for months, in some cases, because of the corona pandemic.
