Charging stations, can do better

NEWS - Essential to accelerate the energy transition, the installation of charging points in the public domain is slowing down.

Since the European Commission announced on July 14 that the sale of combustion engine vehicles will be banned on European territory from 2035, there is no longer any doubt that electric is the future of the automobile.

To succeed in this transition, which resembles a revolution, the battery recharging infrastructures will have to follow.

During a recent round table, Ola Källenius, the president of Mercedes, hammered it: "Without infrastructure, there will be no electric vehicles."

We are warned.

We already know that this field will have to change scale to meet the needs of new owners of rechargeable battery vehicles.

Today, in France, there is 1 charging point for 12 vehicles with rechargeable batteries. We are no worse off - Germany has a terminal for 16 cars - but this is not enough because the fleet has just exceeded 600,000 rechargeable battery cars thanks to the registration of more than 150,000 private vehicles. and utilities since the start of 2021.

To support the acceleration of the ecological transition, the French public authorities launched a € 100 million investment program last year with a view to achieving the objective of 100,000 charging points in public spaces. at the end of 2021. We already know that this objective will not be reached.

At the beginning of July, there were only 43,700 public charging points.

According to the company Mobileese, which assists businesses and communities in electromobility, the number of installations has only grown by 5% in 3 months.

We know that the government objective is unattainable this year.

To succeed in the energy transition, it will also be necessary to meet two other challenges: installing charging stations in the right place and increasing rapid charging. In urban areas, recharging is a real headache. According to studies, 50% of city dwellers do not have private parking and therefore cannot charge their vehicle at night, at their home. In addition to the normal charging network (allowing a vehicle to be recharged in 3 to 8 hours), there is an urgent need to deploy rapid charging solutions. While the rate of equipment on motorway rest areas is increasing, the secondary network remains largely neglected.
