(ANSA) - ROME, AUGUST 07 - During the night and again in the early hours of today, over a thousand people were evacuated from the Greek island of Evia, after the fires that are still raging have made it impossible to travel by other means.
This was reported by the British broadcaster Sky News, which also broadcasts a video in which people can be seen embarking on the horizon, in the night, beyond the body of water, it appears as if framed by fire: they are the flames that rise from behind the hills.
"It's like an apocalypse here. I don't know how else to describe the situation," the chief of the coast guard in the city of Aidipsos told state broadcaster Ert. Greek civil protection officer Nikos Hardalias said firefighters had to face "exceptionally dangerous and unprecedented conditions" in an attempt to dispel 154 fires still active yesterday, 64 of which continued to burn overnight across the country. One of the elements that made the evolution of the situation even more unpredictable was the sudden change of the winds yesterday, which brought the flames to the gates of Athens and to Evia to change direction several times, returning in some cases to threaten areas that had already been lapped by the fires.
