Which plant components you need for this.

Schwerin - A ginkgo tree in the garden can quickly take up too much space without proper care.

If gardening enthusiasts cut it back regularly, it will grow as a beautiful tree or shrub.

The leaves of the tree are easy to pick and dry in summer.

The dried leaves are later used as tea leaves.

Ginkgo tree: how to use the leaves from the garden

The ginkgo tree has already come a long way.

Originally from China, it has now spread all over the world.

According to the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU), it is a very special representative of plants: it is the only surviving tree of a group of seed plants that has since become extinct.

The tree belongs to the ginkgo family and is dioecious.

This means that there are either all male or all female ginkgo plants.

In order to propagate the tree, a representative of both groups is required in reach.

According to NABU, the ginkgo tree has one advantage, because the pollen of the male tree can sometimes fly for kilometers to reach a female tree.

Actually, the ginkgo trees belong to the naked people.

Nevertheless, after successful pollination, the seeds are surrounded by a fleshy shell over time, which is why the seeds belong to the dummy fruits.

If gardening fans do not collect the small, round seed balls, it can very soon stink badly.

Because as soon as the seeds start to decompose, they give off an intense, sometimes unpleasant odor.

This is why gardeners often find male trees on roadsides that do not lose seed balls.

Ginkgo tree: how to choose the right leaves

Whether a male or female tree grows in the garden is completely irrelevant for the production of tea leaves *.

It is best for gardening enthusiasts to pick medium-aged ginkgo leaves from their tree in summer and pluck them.

Then proceed as follows:

  • Gardeners need to remove the stalks of the leaves.

  • Then cut the leaves into four quarters and place them on a clean kitchen towel.

  • Air drying * should take place in a dark, warm room.

  • After a while, the leaves will be dry and ready to be pounded further.

The dry, shredded leaves can then be used as tea leaves.

Garden enthusiasts pour hot water over it and let the leaves steep for at least ten minutes *.

The ginkgo tea is ready!

Many people ascribe particular importance to this tea, because the nutrients contained in the gingko leaves are said to increase memory, promote blood circulation, help with sleep disorders and depression and have an anti-inflammatory effect.

But be careful: the leaves also contain what is known as ginkgolic acid.

This protects the tree from insects and makes it particularly robust.

However, this ginkgolic acid is harmful to humans and is suspected of causing allergies.

For this reason, ginkgolic acid must always be reduced to a minimum in drugs that contain ginko extracts.

For tea, however, there is the all-clear: Ginkgolic acid is very difficult to dissolve in water and therefore it is not dangerous to eat.

However, pregnant women should not consume any ginkgo products.
