Store carrots: this is how you store carrots correctly

At best, late varieties are left in the ground for as long as possible, but they should not become overripe, as carrots can then burst.

Carrots that are ripe earlier can gradually be harvested and consumed fresh.

After harvest, carrots will last for a few months without going bad in good conditions.

But sort out unripe carrots as well as damaged ones or use them straight away.

Only late varieties are suitable for long storage.

How

to properly

store

late-ripening carrots

after harvesting:

  • Twist or cut off the leaves by hand, otherwise the vegetables would be deprived of moisture

  • Do not wash

  • Ideally, the carrots are then stored in sand and will last for a few months

  • For this, in addition to sand, you also need a wooden box or other container and a very cool storage room with high humidity

  • The carrots are alternately piled with sand, the individual carrots should not touch

  • At the top and bottom, the whole thing ends with sand

  • Alt Alternative is a ground rent in the garden

If you don't have a cool cellar, you can store the carrots upright in damp sand if necessary.

Alternatively, you can of course store individual carrots wrapped in the refrigerator and then consume them more quickly.

Another option: make it durable.

Storing carrots: How to preserve carrots

If you neither want to consume carrots directly nor can you store them, you should make them durable.

This is particularly useful for late varieties that are not repeatedly harvested as needed.

Especially in late summer, a lot of vegetables quickly ripen and have to be processed somehow.

There are several options for preserving carrots:

  • Freezing

: Washed, peeled and, if necessary, cut carrots can be frozen wonderfully.

However, they get a little mushy when thawing and are therefore more suitable for soups or stews.

Alternatively, the carrots can be blanched briefly beforehand so that they stay crisper and last longer.

  • Insert

: We explain how this works with an example.

Anyone who has ever bought carrots by the glass knows the consistency.

This makes the vegetables a little softer, but they can easily be given individual spices and herbs.

  • Water bath

: carrots can also keep for over a week in this, even if the water does not keep them long.

The clean carrots are put in a container with water, the lid is on top and everything is allowed in the refrigerator.

The water should be changed regularly.

The carrots must be completely covered by the water.

Pickled carrots in particular last a long time and go well with all kinds of dishes.

If normal carrots are too boring for you, you can sow colored carrots, for example, yellow or purple carrots are often old varieties.

She also longs to be particularly pretty, for example, with colorful potatoes in the casserole or stir-fry vegetables.
