His death was announced by the Prime Minister of Jamaica himself, Andrew Holness, on Twitter, with these words:
“Lee 'Scratch' Perry died this morning while in Noel Holmes Hospital.
He was 85 years old. ”
Born Rainford Hugh Perry into a working-class family in March 1936, better known by the sobriquet "The Upsetter", this Jamaican producer and musician was one of those who changed the course of popular music.
A task he began in the late 1950s working in the studio of the legendary Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, pioneer of reggae and ska.

His first single,
People Funny Boy
, was already showing his innovative skills, with the use of a sampled sound (a baby crying), years before the invention.
