Nearly three in four new cars in Norway are electric

Already far ahead in this area, the Scandinavian country, a major producer of hydrocarbons, has set a new record. Many advantages

This is a statistic that seems far removed from the reality of the French market.

Soon three quarters of new registrations in Norway will be fully electric cars (6.3% in France in the first half of 2020), estimated this Wednesday, a specialized body after a record recorded in August in the country, world leader in the field. .

According to the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), 71.9% of new cars sold last month in the Scandinavian country - paradoxically the largest producer of hydrocarbons in Western Europe - were vehicles with drums.

Nine of the ten best-selling models were electric, with Tesla's latest Model Y, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4 forming the top three.

The only non-electric model at the top of the table is a hybrid vehicle, the Toyota RAV4.

"If the trend that we have observed in recent months continues, three out of four new new passenger cars will soon be electric cars," the OFV said in a statement.

According to the OFV, Norway is on the right track to achieve its ambition of having all its new cars "zero emissions" - electric and hydrogen - from 2025.

Electricity production from hydraulic dams

"If we do not succeed completely because there are always places in the country that need other forms of fuel, we will not be far," said the director of the OFV, Øyvind Solberg Thorsen.

“The evolution has been much faster than expected and this is due to the fact that more and more manufacturers are offering good and interesting electric models,” he explained.

The use of electric propulsion is considered all the more relevant in the Nordic country as it draws almost all of its electricity from hydraulic dams which do not produce greenhouse gas emissions.

In Norway, the community of electric vehicle drivers enjoys multiple benefits even though the authorities have started to cut back on some of the privileges granted to it, such as free urban tolls or the possibility of using public transport corridors. .

Unlike heavily taxed diesel or gasoline cars, clean cars are virtually free of any tax, which makes them more competitive to purchase.

On the manufacturer side, several such as Volvo, DS and Lancia have announced that they will switch to all-electric in the years to come.
