During a raid against speedsters, the police and public prosecutor's office in Düsseldorf secured a cell phone video that the driver is said to have recorded at a speed of 305 km / h.
The 23-year-old man filmed himself on Autobahn 3 near Leverkusen on a section on which a speed limit of 120 km / h applies, the investigators said.
The investigation into the man and two other suspects began after a race in mid-March.
According to the police, a witness had seen three sports cars compete in a race in all three lanes on Autobahn 46.
With their high-horsepower cars, they also raced at full throttle through the Düsseldorf tunnel under the university grounds.
There is a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour.
The police secured recordings from traffic surveillance cameras in the tunnel and saw the witness's statements confirmed, as it was now called.
The suspects aged 22 and 23 from Solingen, Wesseling and Krefeld are said to have bragged about their frenzy on social media.
In the raid, two of the three sports cars involved, an Audi R8 and a Mercedes-AMG, as well as data carriers were confiscated.
In addition, the accused's driver's licenses were provisionally revoked.
The third car, a BMW M3, has since been sold by one of the suspects.
Investigations against alleged supporters
The suspects either paid for the expensive cars themselves or were financed by their parents, it said.
It is also being investigated against two alleged supporters from Siegburg and Cologne.
The main suspects face a fine or up to two years in prison for participating in an illegal race.
If it is proven that they are at risk to third parties, this would be a particularly serious case, for which up to five years' imprisonment can be imposed.
The speed limit of 305 km / h is according to the Düsseldorf motorway police in the region with a network of 700 kilometers of motorway.
