A

professional fishing guide

was surprised in the Paraná River when he was carrying 18 bags with just over

700 kilos of capybaras

that had been hunted in the area of the city of Ituzaingó, in the province of Corrientes.

A patrol from the Naval Prefecture that was conducting a routine check in the waters of the Paraná River, stopped the march of a traker-type boat that had left Ituzaingó towards the area known as “Tres Islas”.

The boat, named "Lobizón", which was powered by a 40 HP engine, was manned by a man from Ituzaingó.

As soon as the prefects approached, they noticed a huge amount of packages inside the traker.

The helmsman did not resist the procedure and when he opened the bags, it was found that they were

specimens of capybara

, an animal that is widely consumed in the area in different culinary preparations.

As it turned out, the animals had been hunted in the area of the lagoons and estuaries near Ituzaingó and

had as their final destination Paraguay, where there is a collector

.

Since the beginning of the quarantine, clandestine hunting became for many unemployed people in that town in Corrientes a job opportunity.

The pandemic had a strong impact on the town, not only due to contagions, but also due to the

absence of tourists

, who fill its wide beaches every summer.

The closure of the borders also prevented the arrival of Brazilian fishermen who arrived in search of the large specimens of surubí and dorado.

The Prefectural patrol seized the capybara meat, which was made available to the Corrientes Natural Resources Directorate, while the boat was kidnapped and was deposited in the Ituzaingó Prefecture by order of the prosecutor Eugenio Balbastro.

The man will face an administrative process for

violation of the Corrientes Hunting Law

and could receive a fine and a ban on hunting for up to three years.

In addition, a

criminal case

was opened

for violating Article 27 of the Wildlife Conservation Law.

For this fact, the man could receive a sentence of between one month and one year in suspended prison.

Judicial spokesmen said that the capybara can be hunted on some special occasions (when it is detected on populations in some places), although they clarified that

this is not the case

.

It is the second seizure of capybara meat made by the Prefecture of Ituzaingó in the last month.

Judicial sources said that a few weeks ago another man was caught with almost 400 kilos of meat from the world's largest rodent.
