Innovative therapy for the treatment of diabetic foot at the San Donato hospital in Arezzo.

This is what was announced, in a note, by ASL Toscana southeast.

At San Donato a multidisciplinary team led by Alessia Scatena, director of the Uoc Diabetology & Metabolic Diseases, activated an innovative autologous cell therapy (taking cells from the patient himself) whose clinical results were also published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. "For some years - declares Scatena -, we have been involved in clinical research for the treatment of diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia at high risk of amputation, using an innovative therapy that is based on the patient's own peripheral blood cells: the We put together a high-level team and conducted a study on 76 patients whose situation could no longer be treated. This path, which lasted two years, showed a positive clinical outcome in patients with diabetic foot and non-revascularisable critical ischemia, significantly reducing the amputation rate and improving survival and wound healing. The results - he continues - showed us a lower amputation rate in the group treated with the new therapy compared to the control group, a two-year survival of more than 80% and a cure rate of 86.6% ".80% and a cure rate of 86.6% ".80% and a cure rate of 86.6% ".

"A very important fact - continues Scatena - is that the cell concentrate was produced directly in the operating room with a dedicated point of care system, certified for human cell therapy (Cook Regentec Hematrate Blood Filtration System)".

"This particular pathology of the diabetic foot is much more frequent than one can imagine - he concludes -. The numbers in Italy, despite improving, show about seven thousand amputations of the lower limbs per year. With this therapy we are acting precisely to reduce these numbers and avoid traumatic amputations ". (HANDLE).
