(ANSA) - VENICE, 02 SEPT - It will be thanks to a robot that will try to reconstruct the puzzle of the thousands of fragments of the frescoes of the House of Painters at work and of the ScholaArmatorarum in Pompeii. This is the goal of the European project "RePAIR" (Reconstruction the past: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics meet Cultural Heritage) started in these days in September and coordinated by the Ca 'Foscari University of Venice.

Thousands of fragments, like small pieces of a puzzle, will be rearranged with the help of a robotic infrastructure, equipped with mechanical arms capable of scanning the fragments, recognizing them through a 3D digitization system and returning them to the right location.

It is the first time that such advanced robotic technology has been used in the most important archaeological site in Italy.

The task of 'recognizing' the right fresco fragments will be up to a 3D digitization system, which will restore the correct location. While the fragments will be recognized and scanned, the arms and hands of mechanical precision will manipulate and move with the aid of highly advanced sensors able to avoid the slightest damage.

The object of the experiment will be the ceiling frescoes of the House of Painters at Work in the Insula dei Casti Amanti, damaged during the eruption of 79 AD and then reduced to shatters following the bombing of the second world war, and the fragments of the frescoes of the ScholaArmaturarum, caused by the collapse. of the building in 2010 and partly still not relocated.
