Potatoes are one of the Germans' favorite side dishes.

But how long can they actually be kept?

And how do I know that they have become inedible?

Potatoes * have become an indispensable part of German cuisine.

Whether classic as jacket potatoes with butter and quark, as tempting potato gratin with lots of cheese gratin, as fried potatoes or French fries - almost everyone has a favorite dish that is prepared from the versatile tuber.

Potatoes also convince with their valuable ingredients: numerous vitamins, minerals and fiber make them a healthy and tasty treat.

Most potato varieties are in season

from July to October

.

In the remaining months they are available as stock items.

But how long do potatoes actually last - regardless of whether they are raw or cooked?

How long can potatoes keep?

  • Uncooked potatoes

can be kept for several months if stored correctly (see below).

However, this does not apply to everyone: new potatoes

should be stored for a maximum of two months.

  • Boiled potatoes:

3-4 days in a cool place

  • Frozen, boiled potatoes:

    approx. 12 months.

  • Frozen potato dishes:

    approx. 3 months

What is the best way to store potatoes?

The ideal storage temperature for potatoes is

4-8 degrees Celsius

.

They are badly kept in the fridge because it is too cold here.

They should be

stored

as

dark

and dry

as possible

to prevent premature germ formation.

In addition, when it is bright, the production of solanine is favored: the potato sprouts and turns green, which can lead to health problems such as headaches.

By the way, if potatoes are stored next to fruits and vegetables that release the ripening gas ethylene, they spoil faster.

How do you know that potatoes are bad?

To check whether boiled potatoes are still edible, you can simply trust your senses: If the tubers smell strange or no longer look particularly appetizing, it is better to throw the potatoes away.

Things are more difficult with uncooked potatoes, especially when they have already been sprouted.

But don't worry: even if the first shoots are already sticking out of the potatoes, the tubers can still be eaten without hesitation.

Only when the

shoots are longer than one centimeter

should the potatoes go into the trash.

The reason: too much of the poisonous substance solanine, which is also responsible for green spots on the skin, has already formed in the potatoes.

Shorter shoots and green spots should be removed generously - then nothing stands in the way of enjoying potatoes.
