By the beginning of 2033, all people who obtained their driver's license before January 19th, 2013 must have exchanged their driver's license.
Otherwise there is a risk of penalties.
Munich - The EU wants to introduce a forgery-proof driving license.
These driving licenses should then all be recorded in a database and, above all, be uniform.
This means: All motorcycle and car driving licenses must be exchanged for a new version by January 19, 2033.
A staggering is planned for a smooth process, because the owners must personally submit an application to the authorities for the exchange.
It is about the exchange of around 15 million paper and 28 million plastic driver's licenses.
Deadlines for the driver's license exchange: These are the key dates according to the year of birth or the year of issue
The following is planned for the deadlines: For older paper driving licenses that were issued before December 31, 1998, the date of birth of the holder should determine the day on which the deadline ends.
Year of birth | Deadline |
Before 1953 | 01/19/2033 |
1953-1958 | 01/19/2022 |
1959-1964 | 01/19/2023 |
1965-1970 | 01/19/2024 |
From 1971 | 01/19/2025 |
For plastic driving licenses that were issued after 01.01.1999, the year of issue decides on the exchange period.
Year of issue | Deadline |
1999-2001 | 01/19/2026 |
2002-2004 | 01/19/2027 |
2005-2007 | 01/19/2028 |
2008 | 01/19/2029 |
2009 | 01/19/2030 |
2010 | 01/19/2031 |
2011 | 01/19/2032 |
2012-18.01.2013 | 01/19/2033 |
Exchange at the driving license authority: This is required
An identity card or passport and a biometric passport photo are required for the exchange.
The driving license authority of your place of residence is responsible.
The cost is around 25 euros.
The driver's license is then valid for 15 years.
Anyone who does not adhere to the deadlines and then continues to drive with an old driver's license must expect a fine of 10 euros and further consequences if they fail to comply.
Another innovation is also in sight: the EU Commission committed itself to a digital driver's license as early as 2020, and concepts are currently being drawn up for this.
There is currently no schedule.
