All kinds of social groups are supposed to be represented in the broadcasting councils, which take on important supervisory functions for the public service broadcasters in Germany - but traditionally they are often divided into two camps along political lines.
Was that also the case with the vote on who should succeed the outgoing director of Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), Manfred Krupp?
In any case, the deputy ARD program director Florian Hager and HR operations director Stephanie Weber stood for election in the broadcasting council meeting.
In three ballots there was a stalemate with 16 votes for the two candidates, announced the office of the Broadcasting and Administrative Council on Friday afternoon.
This means that there will be a new election at the next Broadcasting Council meeting on December 3, at which new candidates can also be proposed by the Broadcasting Council members.
Broadcasting Council Chairman Rolf Müller said according to the announcement that the tie underscores “that two outstanding candidates presented themselves today.
Unfortunately no result could be achieved. "
The Broadcasting Council commissioned the search committee again, Müller continued.
The Frankfurt film producer Ina Knobloch, who according to newspaper reports had also applied for the office, was not selected by the selection committee like some others as a candidate for the first ballot.
She had criticized the "in-house policy" of the station in advance.
