South Korean President

Moon Jae-in has asked Pope Francis to visit North Korea

to bring peace to the peninsula, obtaining a positive response from the pontiff, presidential spokesman Park Kyung-mee reported.

"If the pontiff visits the North when the opportunity presents itself, it will be an impetus for peace on the Korean peninsula," Moon told the pope, second, in the Yonhap news agency report.

The pope encouraged Moon, saying he was willing "to go there for peace and help all of you if North Korea sends an invitation letter," Park added.

"The talks then allowed an exchange of views on some issues pertaining to regional current affairs and humanitarian emergencies", the Holy See again reports in the note on the audience.

The Korean president, after meeting with the Pope, saw Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, accompanied by Msgr.
