Police officers are said to have done pushups at the Berlin Holocaust memorial and filmed each other.
"Bild" and "BZ" report on video recordings that the officers are supposed to show how they are doing the sports exercises dressed in uniform.
A spokesman for the police confirmed to SPIEGEL that the facts were known.
At the memorial, which commemorates the six million Jews killed by the Nazis, jumping over the steles is prohibited.
The incident is said to have occurred on the weekend of Pentecost last May.
The police officers were reportedly part of an alert group that was deployed to conduct several demonstrations in the government district.
The supervisors are said to have learned about the push-ups, but have not dealt with the incident.
Police are examining the consequences
The Berlin police chief Barbara Slowik apologized to the Jewish community according to »Bild«.
It is »a disregard for what this memorial stands for and does not correspond to the respect that must be paid to it.
It hurts the memory of the murdered. "
The police spokesman told SPIEGEL that talks would now be held with the police officers who can be seen in the video.
The conversation with their superiors would also be sought.
Then the consequences under service law should be examined.
