(ANSA) - BEIJING, 02 NOV - A statement by the Chinese government urging local authorities to ensure adequate food supplies and encouragement to families to stock up on some essential goods has sparked online discussions, amid fears of a widening of the coronavirus epidemic, of a cold wave already foreseen and increased tensions with Taiwan. The Commerce Minister has urged local authorities to stabilize prices and ensure supplies of basic necessities, including vegetables, for the winter and spring, according to a news released late Monday on which a similar invitation is addressed to families, encouraged to stock up for the winter months or emergencies. In response to increasingly concerned online discussions, the Economic Daily,a Communist Party-backed newspaper urged netizens not to go "too far into an overactive imagination," by formulating an authentic interpretation of the directive whose purpose was only to ensure that citizens were not caught off guard in the event of a blockade in their area. The central government typically makes efforts on supplies of fresh vegetables and pork ahead of China's most important holiday, Lunar New Year, which will fall in early February in 2022. Currently, however, these efforts have become more urgent after extreme October weather destroyed crops in Shandong, China's largest vegetable growing region.and as outbreaks of Covid-19 cases concentrated mainly in the north-east and north-west of the country threaten to stop food supplies. The Commerce Ministry added that local authorities should purchase vegetables that can be stored well in advance and also seek to strengthen emergency delivery networks to ensure "smooth and efficient" distribution channels.
