(ANSA) - BEIJING, 02 NOV - Beijing has halved its flights, as part of a robust squeeze against the outbreaks of Covid-19.

According to the aviation industry monitoring site VariFlight, about half of the flights to and from the capital's two airports were canceled today.

Beijing authorities are on high alert after a handful of local infections that emerged over the weekend raised fears of a much greater risk of contagion. The health commission made it clear that residents who had left the city for business or leisure trips to areas with confirmed cases should "postpone" their return, causing social media discontent.

The Chinese capital has tightened travel restrictions after a series of new Covid-19 cases in the city and other parts of the country.

At a video meeting last night, Cai Qi, head of the Communist Party in Beijing, said the city had reported a new outbreak of family groups, urging officials to immediately take action to break the chain of transmission.
